Could Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803) have foreseen certain issues that are central to today's environmental humanities? This lecture delves into Herder's reflections regarding the habitability of our planet, within the broader framework of the interdisciplinary currents of the European Enlightenment. What's at stake here is not only the specific historical context that shaped Herder's views on planetary habitability, but also the question of whether an Enlightenment perspective on this matter remains pertinent for grappling with the challenges posed by the "Anthropocene.”
